We were approached by a couple who wanted to make a special feature of the main front entrance to their home.
The property was a converted cottage that had been extended and developed to create something befitting of Grand Designs. However the front entrance screen was made from softwood which had become so warped that the wind blew between the door and the frame which made it hard to lock.
We carefully removed the old entrance door as well as the sashes on either side and replaced these with a purpose made oak screen door.
The couple were very interested in ecclesiastic architecture and wanted to introduce this style into their home. Robert was an accomplished church organist and often played while we were working on the project. One particular feature that he had come across in his Church organ playing was a ‘quatrefoil’.
We developed a design that incorporated the hand machining of ‘quatrefoil’ details in the lower panels of the screen door rather than a simple raised and fielded panel. The Gothic arched glazing detail in the upper section of the door continues into the sashes either side which, unlike the previous solid door, allow natural light to flood in and fill the hallway.
The client was delighted with the work which has been since been featured in an interiors magazine.
