One of our clients lives in a lovely barn conversion in Somerset. Three wide arches run the length of one side of the building, with windows providing views over a garden area and the countryside beyond, as well as glazed doorway access to the garden.
The windows and doors that had been previously fitted had rather wide, heavy, wooden frames which obscured a lot of light. They were also quite old, so our client had contacted us to explore options for replacing them.
Following a site visit, and some discussions around what our client wanted to achieve, it was agreed that it would be beneficial to replace the old frames with new, less heavy ones to allow more light into the room.
The main challenge was dealing with the irregular, elliptical nature of the wide arches, which required a bespoke solution. Our skilled joiners took careful measurements and then worked to create new frames that followed the irregular curve of the stone.
We used a sustainably sourced Sapele to make the frames, a hard wood well-known for its durability. Sapele has a rich mahogany colour that works really well with the stone walls as well as with the style of the rooms. It also provides excellent value as the new door and window frames will last for many years.
Once the frames had been built, the wood was treated with a natural oil finish, which works particularly well with Sapele wood. We also fitted toughened double-glazed glass panels for improved energy efficiency and increased security.
The end result was stunning and our client is over the moon with their new windows and doors.
